Muscle Relaxing Injections

Botox® is a well known and very popular treatment for treating lines and wrinkles that are caused by smiling, laughing and frowning.  Botox minimises the muscle movement that cause these fine lines and furrows.  Though once fashionable to “freeze” the muscles Botox® is now used more subtly to restore a more relaxed and youthful appearance.

Treatment is virtually painless and results are visible within a few days.  Typically the benefits last for three to four months.  In addition to the treatment of frown lines and wrinkles, Botox® can also be used to manage Excessive Sweating.

Botox may be used on its own or in conjunction with other skin rejuvenating treatments such as Skin Peels and Omnilux™ Light Therapy for greatest benefit.

Common Questions

How does Botox® work?

Botulinum Toxin relaxes the facial muscles that are connected to expression lines so that they cannot contract.  It does this by blocking impulses from the nerve endings to the tiny facial muscles.  After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled and the untreated facial muscles function normally.

Is Botox® treatment safe?

Botulinum Toxin injections have safely been used for many years to treat lines and wrinkles and also to manage many neurological and ophthalmological conditions.  Tens of thousands of people have received Botulinum Toxin to relieve a variety of conditions and it is certainly a very popular anti-ageing treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects to treatment are infrequent but some people experience some minor and temporary bruising at the injection site.  We can cover this up with our Jane Iredale make up.  Some people also report a mild, transient headache.  A temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid has also been reported, but is extremely rare.

What does treatment feel like?

The treatment involves a small number of tiny and practically painless injections.  Immediately afterwards there may be some mild swelling that usually subsides within 24-48 hours

Which areas can be treated?

Muscle relaxing injections lead to a temporary weakening of the target muscle.  This results in a reduction of the wrinkles above the target muscle. Examples include the deep crease or “frown” line between the eyebrows, wrinkles around the eyes or “crow’s feet” and any horizontal forehead lines.  Used in the lower face it can reduce lipstick bleed lines and lessen “sad” lines which are the lines which lead down from the corners of the mouth.

 Who carries out the treatment?

Treatments are carried out by our visiting expert medical practitioner Dr Fiona Cowie who has been carrying out our injectable treatments for many years.

Testimonials

"I was a little nervous about having Botox just in case for any reason it didn’t suit me but I was quickly reassured by the doctors. I couldn’t believe how quickly the treatment was done and considering it is an injection I really didn’t feel a thing. The effects really started to show after about 3 days where I realised that when I tried to frown I couldn’t even though I felt like I was. I still have natural movement in my forehead but wrinkles don’t show it’s amazing! My eyebrows have a more youthful shape and altogether I think it gives me a fresher and less tired appearance. I would definitely have it again."
